The MIPS® (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System) technology consists of three main parts. The EPS polystyrene shell, the MIPS glide liner and the elastomers that connect the first two parts. In the event of an angled impact, the elastomers will stretch, allowing the helmet shell to move slightly against the MIPS liner, absorbing rotational forces. This is a movement on the order of millimetres. But even these few millimetres, during those critical 2 milliseconds, can significantly reduce the amount of rotational forces that would otherwise be transmitted to the brain.
