You grip the cape tightly in your hand and lean it against the slope. The steel spike digs into the snow for support. The connection between your hand and the axe is a Camp Touring loop, so it can't slip and be lost in the event of a fall. Use the steel tip to cushion a fall, or jam it to help you climb.
