Značku Hoka (původně Hoka One One) založili ve Francii v roce 2009 Nicolas Mermoud a Jean-Luc Diard, bývalí zaměstnanci společnosti Salomon, s jasným cílem – usnadnit a zpříjemnit běh z kopce. V době, kdy světu vládl trend takzvaného bosého (minimalistického) běhání, přišla Hoka s naprostým opakem. Představila boty s obří, masivní mezipodešví, které na první pohled působily robustně, ale překvapily svou neuvěřitelnou lehkostí a extrémním tlumením.
Tento „maximalistický“ přístup způsobil revoluci v běžeckém průmyslu. Klíčem k úspěchu obuvi Hoka je kombinace měkké tlumicí pěny, kolébkového tvaru podrážky Meta-Rocker (která podporuje přirozený a rychlý přechod z paty na špičku) a hlubokého usazení chodidla uvnitř mezipodešve pro maximální stabilitu.
