Birdie is a compact, simple belay device with assisted brake for belaying a first climber or over a "top rope" (on a fish). The entire construction of the BEAL Birdie is metal. The internal connecting parts + dynamic cam and friction hammer, are stainless steel for increased durability. The rope passes through the axis of the belayer - so there is no twisting of the rope when rubbing over the edge as is the case with other manufacturers.
BEAL Birdie is compatible with single dynamic ropes from 8.5mm (BEAL Opera) to 10.5mm (BEAL TopGun). The most suitable rope diameter for comfortable belay control is 9-10mm. The belayer is secured with a connecting carabiner after the rope is established. During operation it is therefore not possible to open the belay device in any way. The Birdie belayer also includes a small screw which, when screwed in, prevents the user from opening it. This belay option can be used for example by rope centres or climbing courses.
