The chainring determines how efficiently you transfer power from pedaling to the chain, and together with the cassette it defines the range of gears. A worn chainring makes shifting harder and can cause the chain to skip, so it’s worth replacing it in time. The number of teeth depends on the terrain and your fitness level.

When choosing a chainring, make sure it’s compatible with your cranks and the bolt pattern, and that it has the right number of teeth for the type of bike you ride. Smaller chainrings make climbing hills easier, while larger ones allow you to go faster on flat terrain.
