An integral part of the company's logo and mascot is the Michelin Man, called Bibendum. The company was founded on 28 May 1889 by the brothers André and Édouard Michelin in Brussels.
The company is headquartered in Clermont-Ferrand, France. By 2005, the company was the world's largest tyre manufacturer, but was overtaken by rival Bridgestone the following year. Today, Michelin has 69 plants in 19 countries with more than 124,000 employees. More than 4,000 researchers work for the company in technology centres in North America, Europe and Asia. Around 190 million tyres are produced annually.
