FENIX 14500 1050 mAh (Li-Ion) - rechargeable batteries

The rechargeable Li-ion battery Fenix ARB-L14-1050 (14500) with protection is based on lithium ion technology. Li-ion technology gives one of the best ratios of the amount of stored energy to cell weight, batteries have no memory effect and self-discharge is minimal.

The battery protection can be divided into two areas. In the first, electronic circuits are added to prevent overcharging the cell (a situation where conventional li-ion batteries risk exploding) or, on the contrary, over-discharging it (the battery would then not be rechargeable). In addition, these circuits protect the battery against short circuits or high current draw that could damage the battery. If the battery electronics assess that the limits have been reached, they will disconnect the cell. In the latter, there is over-temperature protection (PTC thermal protection) and a special explosion-proof valve.

Unlike other valves used in Li-ion batteries, this one, when the gas pressure in the cell exceeds a certain limit, separates the electrodes inside the battery, thus de-facto interrupting the exothermic reaction and venting the excess gas pressure outside the battery. The combination of electronic and mechanical (temperature and pressure) protection makes the Fenix battery one of the safest Li-ion batteries available.

The 14500 is roughly the same size as a conventional (AA type) pencil battery, but has approximately 3 times the voltage. Therefore, it can only be used to power flashlights and headlamps that support this higher voltage.
