Duck down is considered one of the best insulating materials. The thermal insulating properties of down feathers are due to its rugged surface, where air accumulates in the cavities between the microscopic rays. Small feathers are usually mixed into the down. It is best suited for winter jackets and expedition sleeping bags, where the highest demands are placed on the lightness and compressibility of the filling, while minimising the possibility of it becoming wet.
