The 2x gearing provides all the necessary gearing. Smaller frames (XS and S) have modified brake levers, making brake control easier and more comfortable for riders with smaller hands. It has separate brake and shift levers (a feature common on more expensive mountain bikes) so you can adjust their position as needed for convenience.
