Water column reflects the fabric's ability to withstand water pressure without getting wet. If a tent has a listed water column of 3000mm, then this means that if we place a cylinder of water up to 3m high on the tent fabric, the fabric will withstand water pressure up to that height before it starts to leak. For example, the UK Ministry of Defence considers fabric with a water column of 800mm to be waterproof. Apart from rain, there are many other influences that affect the performance of tents.
