In 1929, Edwin Land (who has 535 patents to his credit) discovered the first synthetic polarizing material for commercial use.

Polarisation - a modern phenomenon

This phenomenon hit us full force in the 20th century and one of its results is a modern invention - polarized glasses, which eliminate a very high percentage of all glare and reflections unpleasant to the human eye. Light reflected from smooth surfaces (road, water surface, panes of glass in windows, etc.) is mostly horizontally polarized (= directional).
